Furniture Refinishing
While refinishing furniture I have
come across magnificent antiques and sometime I came across
pieces that were almost not worth fixing up. Sometimes they
would bring it to me in boxes all in pieces and tell me to fix
it & refinish it. Sometimes the piece was in good shape. In
this region you often come across Art deco style furniture.
A lot of time I get pieces with at least 10 coat of paint on
I even did pieces that had been outside for a long time No matter
what shape its was in when it was finished I have never had
a complaint from a client after a job is compleated. I have
been told that I am too fussy but to me it has to look great
when it comes out of my shop period. I do all stripping by hand.
I don't believe in dipping furniture for several reasons. It
loosens glue joint, It lifts veneer, It can warp wood and discolor
the wood. I have seen antiques that were ruined by dipping it
in a tank. There is one advantage to dipping, it is a lot faster
than by hand and it is cheaper than by hand. You get what you
pay for. I always do all the sanding by hand. A power sander
leaves a lot of awful looking swirl marks on the wood that shows
through the finish. Especially on darker stained wood. The finish
that I put on furniture is either lacquer or varnish. Lacquer
is a whole lot faster to apply than varnish. I can spray 3 or
4 coat of lacquer on a chair in a few hours but varnish takes
about a day for one coat to dry. So it is a lot cheaper to get
a lacquer finish than a varnish. If it is a valuable antique
then you should put varnish for the finish. I have a few pictures
of some furniture that I have refinished check them out. I will
be putting some more up in the future.
